Art Nouveau: 1890-1900s. This type of architecture was hard to characterize. It was primarily based on a decoration style with lots of curves that suggested organic shapes. Art nouveau had a big impact on public taste, and it affected many other art forms, even woman’s fashion.
Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926)
Casa Mila, Antoni Gaudi. (page 495)
This is a very large apartment building made out of carved stone, which is strange because it looks like a big wavy cake. Notice it’s seemingly obsessive lack of any flat surface, straight line, or symmetry.
“The Casa Mila expresses one persons’ fanatical devotion to the ideal of “natural” form, one that scarcely could be developed further.”

Henri van de Velde (1863-1957)
Velde was trained as a painter and was taught by William Morris. He was a designer of a whole bunch of three-dimensional arts and when he got older he focused primarily on architecture. He founded the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts in Germany.
